Self drive will reach Lower Zambezi via Chirundu. Chirundu is a 2-3 hour drive from Lusaka. From Livingstone there are two routes. The normal route is via Mazabuka but the road north of Mazabuka is in a shocking state. The alternative route is along the Bottom Road by taking a east turn in Chisekesi to Gwembe. There is a short stretch of dirt road but the rest is all tar. It is a very pretty route and is much shorter.
(February 2018: The rains have been incessant. I have also been told that some bridges have been destroyed on the route via Gwembe.)
Having arrived at Chirundu look for the sign to Lower Zambezi. After Kiambi and Kanyemba, 4×4 is required. The road passes through several villages and farmlands until you reach the Zambezia Gate, then it is all wilderness.
